About Sierra Institute for Community & Environment

Promoting healthy and sustainable forests and watersheds by investing in the well-being of rural communities and strengthening their participation in natural resource decision-making and programs.

For nearly thirty years Sierra Institute has developed innovative, place-based programs by engaging rural stakeholders through applied research, pilot studies, and collaborative problem solving.

Recognizing the direct relationship rural communities have with forest landscapes, the Institute strives to promote social, environmental, and economic approaches that are sustainable from human and ecological perspectives.

Reviews

Crew Member

June 2020 - July 2020 Taylorsville, CA
“I loved working on trails in Plumas National Forrest and living in the outback. They focus heavily on community building as well, which makes strong interpersonal relationships. The crew leaders designate high levels of responsibility to the crew members, which is a great experience for young adults just entering the workforce.”

Assistant Alum/Supervisor

July 2019 - August 2019 Taylorsville, CA
“I enjoyed the work we did - mostly fuels reduction and other fire management work. I also enjoyed the amount of responsibility I had. I didn't feel overwhelmed with my supervisor duties, but I got a lot of freedom. I got to be a soft leader.”
