I like being able to get real experience on a farm, especially one that is environmentally-minded. I got/will get hands on experience with rotational grazing, inoculating logs with mushrooms, growing greens, habitat management for local wildlife, organic farming, and ecological principles for increasing crop yield. I also got experience at the Farmers' Market. This really is an all-around experience, great for learning business, agriculture, and ecology principles. It is very relaxed, and my mentor is very supportive and flexible. He wants to make sure that I achieve all of my learning goals.
What I wish was different
Nothing! It's been really great! The hours (at least for the mentor I was paired with) are super flexible. I can come home from school on weekends that work best for me.
Advice
Go into this internship with an open mind. There are so many different things to learn, and I suggest trying to learn as much as possible, even if you don't think you will be interested. You will be learning real life agriculture practices. There are also a lot of soft skills involved like communication, cultural appreciation, and team work. You could potentially even learn about business, genetics, etc. I also suggest writing down a summary of every visit with the mentor. That helps you better remember what you learned and reflect on it.
