Engineering Tech and Process Controls

January 2017 • East China Township, MI

What I liked

I like being in the plant and learning about the machinery. It is a different world.

What I wish was different

It is important to clarify what you are available to work and what will be expected of you, every leader is different and communicates differently. Take it upon yourself to make it known what you are able or not able to do. Example: hours available to work, or start time if you have other commitments.

Advice

I have spent time at St. Clair, Belle River, and the Greenwood plants. Each plant is different and has a different dynamic. It is important to get the feel of where you are working and the people you are working with at any plant. Being enthusiastic is good, but when starting work at a new place it is best to sit back and observe before interfering with the current processes.

There wasn't much to do other than spreadsheet modeling, I wish I had had a chance to create models like in my economics classes or to do research on something I was passionate about.

Advice

Tell your boss what work and subjects you are interested and try to develop your relationships with the people around you. They may be willing to help you out in the future or plug your name at a social event.
