USA/Syfy Alternative Programming & Production Intern

June - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I loved the opportunities available for networking with other executives on the USA/Syfy team. People often set aside over an hour of their day to brainstorm with me about potential career opportunities at NBC and share their personal experience navigating careers in entertainment. i found the work environment to be friendly, open, creative and exciting.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had received a long-term internship project for the summer. My team at USA/Syfy received a different number of interns than originally anticipated, which made spearheading an individualized project slightly difficult. Nonetheless, my co-intern and I were eager to tackle the assignment, and I would have loved to see that happen.

Advice

Definitely don't be afraid to challenge yourself and tackle assignments beyond your original internship description. If you hear executives talking about tasks at hand, from creative research to budget analysis, where you believe you can lend your skills, it doesn't hurt to ask at an appropriate time and see how you can assist. It's a great way to broader your skillset and gain a more comprehensive understanding of how projects come to live in entertainment.

Oxygen Digital Editorial Intern

January - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked that the team trusted me to do my projects, and as I got comfortable, they challenged me with more work and assignments that were within my skill set. They were very open to me asking about what I want to learn and what I may be interested in! I grew a lot and learned so much.

What I wish was different

I guess I wish there was more structure to the job. Sometimes there were times where I wasn't entirely sure how long I should take with assignments, or I wouldn't have something to do. I also wish just in general that NBCU offers intern a day to shadow at a different department, so we could see what other people do.

Advice

Do the most. Don't do the minimum. When given an assignment, don't take forever to do it just because you're going to be at work until 6 p.m. anyways. Do assignments with vigor. They know when you're not keeping up as you should, when you're not pushing. They may not say anything, but they know. I can tell by the behaviors.

USA & Syfy Networks Alternative Programming & Production Intern

June - September 2019 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

The people who work in this department are incredibly passionate about what they do, and always want to hear your opinions and understanding of new reality shows (i.e. what you would watch and why, what you have watched, etc.). They always made sure that the other interns and I felt like members of the team rather than just interns!

What I wish was different

The work load can be a little light sometimes, so finding things to keep yourself busy can be difficult. But, those 'empty work' days are nice breaks when larger work with tight deadlines come in that can take a week or so to finish.

Advice

The internship is what you make of it! The office flows in its own way, and being an intern that makes yourself integral to that flow can help give you more work and more opportunities.

Creative Film Music Intern

September - December 2019 • Universal City, CA

What I liked

Learning how the Film Music industry works from the inside of arguably the highest-profile company was incredible. All the after-work events, such as film screenings and work parties were great fun and amazing network opportunities. Lunches with executives and supervisors was another highlight for me. My absolute favorite part was putting together playlists for songs to potentially be used in Universal films.

What I wish was different

Perhaps I would've liked to be even more hands-on with some of the non-creative parts of the job. That couldn't really be helped since I was in the creative department, so it's a good problem.

Advice

You get what you put in. Don't ever be afraid to talk to someone at your internship. They're just people, even if they have your dream job. Always give an effort to be pleasant, because being personable is more important than anything when you're a student or intern. As in intern, you truly don't have much experience to offer, so recruiters and bosses look for someone with a heart to learn. Humility, eagerness to learn, and initiative are the most important things one can ever offer.

What I liked

I liked that I got the opportunity to work for one of the most well-known companies in the world. All the resources that NBC provided me gave me the ability to be as creative and effective in my work as I possibly could. They really care about their employees there and I felt like part of the team even though I was just an intern.

Broadcast Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the hands-on atmosphere of live television. From day one I was thrown into the fast-paced mix, and each day was different! Sometimes I went on field shoots, some days I was primarily editing, and sometimes I was assisting the producers with planning and writing scripts for live interviews. By the end of the internship, I had co-produced 7 live segments!

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to network more with people outside of my department. My days were so packed and the hours were unconventional (7:30am - 3:30pm), so it was difficult to meet with other people in the company.

Advice

Take initiative! Some of the other interns in my department did not get to opportunity to take on as many independent projects as I did because they were not quick enough to the punch or did not speak up about what they were interested in. Additionally, when asked to stay over time, say yes! I didn't get paid overtime, but each late night was so worth it in terms of connecting with my team and getting to take part in special projects. Because of my participation, I was asked to stay at the position for an extra week to help out the crew during a very busy season.
