I loved how supported I felt at this externship. All the individuals who ran the program really wanted you to succeed and had your best interests at heart. They made sure to listen to your feedback and make sure that you saw all that you were interested in. I learned so much about nursing and had so many experiences that made me feel confident coming back into my senior year.
What I wish was different
I wish that it was two weeks longer. I felt like I learned so much in my eight weeks but there was still so much more to learn. Also as a nurse extern, you are in an unique position where you are guided by a preceptor while still given more freedom than a nursing student. It is an unique and safe place to learn so I wish I had two more weeks of it.
Advice
I would advise people to make as much of the externship as you can. There are so many opportunities they provide you with to learn new things and have so many experiences but you have to take them or ask about them. They are very open to what you have to say so speak up and take the opportunities you see and don't let yourself just do the externship, make sure to get everything you can out of it

Student Nurse Extern
June - August 2019 • New York City, NY
What I liked
My experience with Northwell Health as a Student Nurse Extern was amazing. I worked at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Zucker is a psychiatric hospital under the ownership of Northwell Health. I worked under a preceptor for the entire duration of this externship and I learned more than I could have imagined. I formed relationships with all the employees, health care professionals, and patients. I learned something from each and every person I met.
What I wish was different
I honestly had the best experience, I don't think I would change a thing.
Advice
I originally was skeptical about working at a psychiatric hospital because I didn't know if I would want to do psych nursing when i graduated form Villanova. Despite my skepticism, I decided to keep an open mind and try it out. I am so happy I made this decision because it opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities for me after graduation. So my advice would be to try something new and to take advantage of as many opportunities as you are presented with.

Patient Experience Intern
June - August 2018 • Sleepy Hollow Manor, NY
What I liked
I thoroughly enjoyed that my project was my own and something I could be proud to report back to the corporate headquarters. I also enjoyed the friendly and helpful atmosphere. People would go out of their way to help me and make sure I had a wonderful and informative experience.
What I wish was different
I wished that there was more activities involving team-building among the interns. Although the hospital were I worked was amazing, it would've been interesting to hear about the experiences other interns were having at their base hospital, since the hospitals themselves varied on the care they offered and patients they tended to.
Advice
Try to take full advantage to get to know as many people as you can and ask as many questions as you can.

Nurse Extern
June - July 2018 • Manhasset, NY
What I liked
I loved being able to work a full time schedule and follow one nurse every day. You gain an appreciation for what it is the RN does each and every day. It was a great introduction to what my preceptorship will be like as a senior during the spring semester. I learned better time management skills and found out how i like to organize my assignments for the day.
What I wish was different
I wish it was longer than 8 weeks , the first 1-2 weeks was spent in the classroom doing modules and we only had 6 weeks on the floor. I would have liked to have more time on the floor.
Advice
It really allows you to make the connection between content and clinical. Watching and partaking in the role of the RN is an awesome way to get a full understanding what your role is as an RN.

What I wish was different
