Aquarist Internship

Aquarist Internship

Join the Downtown Aquarium Denver’s Aquarist team this upcoming semester as an Aquarist Intern. Interns will gain experience in aquatic animal care, exhibit maintenance, water quality management, equipment maintenance, maintaining feeding practices, and more.

Essential Duties:

  • Must have an interest in and be willing to learn about aquarium keeping and the biology of the inhabitants at the Downtown Aquarium
  • Ability to climb on exhibits, ladders, and uneven surfaces
  • Willing to get wet and perform ‘dirty jobs’ such as handling fish, squid, shrimp, etc.
  • Will perform similar tasks to aquarists, such as water changes, exhibit cleaning, and food preparation

Learning Outcomes:

  • Form a basic understanding of water quality and it’s relation to animal care
  • Learn the basics on how to maintain aquatic life support systems and their components
  • Understand the role proper nutrition, diet preparation, and feeding plays in caring for aquatic animals
  • Learn how to maintain healthy animals through proper maintenance, monitoring and accepted husbandry protocols

Requirements:

  • Current CPR and SCUBA certified (strongly recommended)
  • At least 18 years old
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders
  • Ability to work shifts between 7:00am-3:00pm 
  • Availability to work 3 days per week (including weekends and holidays)
  • Commitment of 24 hours per week

We anticipate this internship to run early September to early December. This is an unpaid internship and housing will not be provided. Must be able to successfully pass background check. Candidates must be able to attend Orientation.
