Grower for Plant Nursery

Matsuda’s is a well-established nursery consisting of 160 acres of growing grounds in southeast Sacramento County. Matsuda’s has a strong reputation for quality and produces millions of container grown plants annually for retailers and landscapers in California and surrounding states.

The Grower works under the direction of the Propagation Manager to meet production needs for customers as well as to fulfill internal needs for finished plant production, all while ensuring quality plant product. The Grower will focus on propagation and liner production for existing and new growing programs, encompassing trees and shrubs, perennials, succulents and vegetables, and for finished product programs for perennials, succulents and vegetables. 

The successful candidate will have a passion for plants and people, experience in greenhouse and container growing and is not afraid to get their hands dirty. We are looking for someone who can lead by example with their teams to reach personal and professional goals while maintaining a culture of quality and accountability.

This is a full-time, year round position with industry competitive benefits (health insurance, paid holidays, paid vacation). Requires weekend flexibility. Minimal travel.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Work together as a team with other propagation, production and operations staff to successfully and timely produce high quality container plant product
  
• Provide expertise and direction for existing and new growing programs
  
• Monitor growing processes and set and lead activities such as cutting, pruning and spacing
  
• Responsible for daily care including environmental conditions, space allocation, growth control, pinching, insect and disease prevention
  
• Effectively lead teams to meet production requirements and quality standards
  
• Assist with special projects such as plant maintenance for brokered houseplants
  

Requirements:

• BS degree in Horticulture/Ornamental Horticulture, Plant Sciences or a related agricultural field, or 3-5 years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  
• Familiarity with landscape plant material and excellent plant identification skills; houseplant knowledge a plus
  
• Knowledge of horticultural practices/systems; pest management experience or certification a plus
  
• Self-motivated with strong organizational, prioritization and communication skills
  
• Ability to solve practical problems, deal with a variety of changing situations, multi-task in a fast paced environment and open to new ideas
  
• Ability to work well with others, lead teams and inspire employees to accomplish goals; ability to assess performance and develop employee performance and growth 
  
• Ability to work in a nursery environment with exposure to all types of weather
  
• Proficiency with MS Office applications including Excel
  
• Bilingual (English/Spanish)
