This is a work study position; applicant must be eligible for work study to apply.

Note: Students can only have one work study assignment. Eligible hires who's work study is already in use by another CSU employment must request their current CSU employer to transfer their work-study assignment to this position. 

The Institute of Learning and Teaching (TILT) at CSU seeks an undergraduate (freshman or sophomore) work study student to edit captions on course materials. Responsibilities include editing machine-generated captions to 100% accuracy in English, adhering to WCAG 2.2 guidelines for accessibility, and working on related projects as assigned. Applicants must be familiar with English punctuation, grammar, and style, have strong typing skills, and is willing and excited to learn new skills and software.

This position is fully remote. Students must provide their own computer and have an quiet, secure place to work. 

Minimum (Required) Job Skills/Knowledge: 

  • Admitted to a degree program at Colorado State University
  • Work study recipient
    • This is a work study position, please only apply to this position if applicant has available work study. If your work study is used by another employer at CSU, you will be asked to move your work study to TILT in order to be hired for this position.

  • This is a remote work position.
    • Applicants must have reliable access to a private, uninterrupted, and quiet location with a strong internet connection where they can work.
    • Applicants must provide their own computer with at least 20 GB available hard-drive space and the ability to download and install free software.

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA in good academic standing
  • Applicant must be 18 years or older
  • Applicant must be authorized to work in the US
  • Expected Graduation date should be at least Spring 2026 or later
  • Excellent typing skills
  • Proofreading and editorial skills with outstanding sense of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style
  • Research skills with the ability to research spellings of uncommon or technical words, places, events, and names
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, working knowledge of basic computer skills (downloading, uploading, using zip files, etc.)
  • Must be deadline-driven and able work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be comfortable working across academic disciplines and with complex technical jargon
  • Must be comfortable working with content in the sciences (chemistry, bio-med, veterinary medicine, etc.)
  • Must be able to adhere to a consistent weekly schedule (no fluctuating or random work hours)

Preferred Job Skills/Knowledge: 

  • Preferred working hours are a minimum of 10 hours per week, up to 20 hours per week 
  • Experience with and understanding of captioning and subtitling specifications
  • Experience or knowledge of accessibility
  • Previous editing and/or proofreading experience preferred
  • Strong technical proficiency with computers and computer applications, ability to learn new software
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (specifically Excel)
  • Available to work fall, spring, and summer semesters
  • Preference for applicants with a strong familiarity and comfort with technical language used in veterinary sciences, biology, zoology, chemistry, or other sciences.

Essential Duties:

  • Support the creation or remediation of audio/visual content for audio accommodations.
  • Provide closed captioning on course materials.
  • Contribute to daily procedures such as but not limited to quality checks, editing operations manuals, scheduling…
  • Contribute to accessibility related projects on an as needed basis.
  • Collaborate with students, staff, and faculty to support student accommodations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Important Notes:

  • We offer a flexible schedule Monday-Sunday with about 12 – 20 hours per week (with preference for at least 12 hours a week and at least 3 hours of dedicated work per shift), with the opportunity to increase hours depending on business needs.
  • Applicant must commit to a consistent schedule
    • Some of the applicants working hours must be between 8am-5pm each week, but most of the working hours may be outside of a typical work week (i.e. weekends, after 5 pm, before 8 am, etc.)
  • Hourly rate starts at $15.00/hour
