Lab Support Technician

The lab support technician is responsible for the day-to-day support and maintenance of the Plano R&D lab.  The lab consists of a wide range of telecom equipment, from leading edge cloud and VoIP gateways to legacy Nortel switching platforms as well as  varied supporting infrastructure. 

The candidate should possess basic computer skills, be comfortable working in a Windows environment.   He/she should have experience using/maintaining an inventory database.

They should be eager to learn new and old technologies.

Requirements:

  • Proficient with PCs;  Windows environment
  • Experience with installing Operating Systems (OS)
  • Basic understanding of network cabling; Ethernet ,1G and 10G copper and fiber optic cables
  • Basic understanding of telephony; tip & ring, POTS
  • Basic understanding of telecommunications cabling standards; BIX, DSX
  • Basic understanding of TDM carrier; DS1, DS3
  • Basic understanding of synchronization and timing
  • Basic understanding of DC power, batteries and grounding
  • Comfortable with and able to use hand tools; screw drivers, wire cutters, drills
  • Comfortable working at heights
  • Able to lift 50lbs

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Timely action/resolution to support request from lab users
  • Debugging complex telecommunications systems 
  • Operating system fresh installs; Redhat, CentOS, Ubuntu etc
  • Rack mounting telecommunications equipment
  • Maintain/update lab inventory tool
  • Monitor lab AC & DC power usage
  • Monitor lab cooling
  • Keep lab work areas tidy and in “tour ready” state at all times.
