Costume and Textiles Intern

Position Description: The costume and textiles collections intern will work under the direction of the Curator of Costume and Textiles to evaluate, inventory, and catalog objects within the costume and textiles collection. The intern will be responsible for completing the object cataloging process from beginning to end, including researching, photographing and describing fashion objects to be included in the collections database. Intern will be assisting to complete cataloging individual boxes of items. The intern will have a goal of having multiple boxes fully inventoried by internships end. The intern will be a part of a cohort of interns and will have the opportunity to explore other departments and museums on guided outings and tours. 

Duties Include: 

  • Reporting object condition 
  • Photographing objects 
  • Genealogical research in order to complete object records 
  • Researching accessories in order to complete object records 
  • Processing boxes of objects to be inventoried 
  • Attending collections team meetings as available 

Qualifications include: Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. Recent graduates of 9 months or less may also apply. The Intern should possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Intern must be able to sit for long periods of time, lift objects up to 40 pounds, crouch, bend and reach. Students with demonstrated research experience and an interest in fashion history is preferred. 

Wage & Hours: Starting Mid-May or early June depending on student availability. Grant-funded stipend available in the amount of $1500.00 per semester. Flexible schedule, between the hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, approximately 10-20 hours per week.
