Material Science & Content Intern
Job Summary:
ASM International is looking for a curious, detail-oriented undergraduate or graduate student to join our digital publishing team as a Content Intern. In this hands-on role, you'll help make ASM's vast library of materials science and engineering content more accessible, discoverable, and useful to researchers and practitioners worldwide.
This is a paid, hourly position based at ASM's headquarters for the summer term.
Duties & responsibilities
Your primary project will be generating and verifying alt-text (descriptive text) for engineering and scientific images using generative AI tools — a meaningful contribution to both accessibility compliance and the broader field of AI-assisted technical publishing. Additional projects may include:
Improving subject tagging and metadata to enhance content discoverability
- Refining the structure of digital reference content, journals, and databases
- Supporting quality assurance for XML-tagged content
What You'll Learn

- Content curation, metadata development, and subject tagging for technical publications
- Generative AI prompt engineering for scientific and engineering applications

Requirements:
- Seniors or grad students in materials science and engineering, metallurgy, data science/informatics, technical writing, or related fields.
- Genuine interest in content development, data science, or generative AI
- Sharp attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills
- Comfort working collaboratively across teams
- Experience with common productivity and software applications
