Engineering Intern

Integrated Water Services is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Intern to join our Design Services team. In this role, you will support our engineering staff in the development, design, permitting, and optimization of critical water, wastewater, and water reuse infrastructure. This position offers a hands-on opportunity to bridge classroom theory with real-world application, gaining invaluable experience in process modeling, hydraulic engineering, and treatment facility design within a highly collaborative, predominantly remote environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Design Support: Assist the Design Services team in drafting technical specifications, developing facility sketches, and preparing design submittals for water and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Process Modeling: Utilize BioWin software to assist in modeling wastewater treatment processes and evaluating system performance.
  • Calculations & Analysis: Perform fundamental fluid mechanics and hydraulic calculations to support pipe sizing, pump selection, and overall system hydraulics.
  • Treatment Technology Integration: Support the research, layout, and integration of Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) treatment systems and other advanced water reuse technologies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Cross-reference design parameters with EPA water quality standards and local regulatory requirements to assist with the permitting process.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Compile engineering reports, technical memos, and project documentation.
  • Site Visits (Occasional): Travel to active project sites or facilities to assist with site assessments, data collection, or design verification alongside senior engineers.

Requirements

Education & Knowledge:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (Junior, Senior, or Graduate level preferred).
  • Foundational understanding of water, wastewater, and water reuse treatment principles.
  • Specific knowledge of MBR systems is highly desired.
  • Understanding of EPA water quality standards and environmental regulations.

Technical & Software Skills:

  • Familiarity with fluid calculations and hydraulic profiles.
  • Introductory knowledge of or hands-on academic experience with BioWin process modeling software.
  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam for drawing management, markups, and collaboration.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting tools is a plus.

Soft skills:

  • Strong analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Self-discipline to work effectively in a remote environment.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Summer: Full-time commitment (40 hours/week).
  • Academic Semester: Part-time commitment (up to 20 hours/week) with flexible scheduling to accommodate classes and exams.
  • Format: Primarily remote work, requiring a reliable Internet connection and a dedicated workspace. Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
