POSITION

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University will be hiring a seasonal Range/Biology Field Technician to conduct fieldwork at Fort Huachuca, Arizona from approximately July through September, 2018. Duration may be longer based on need.

ORGANIZATION

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. LOCATION

Fort Huachuca is a 70,000 acres United States Army installation located in Cochise County, in southeast Arizona, about 15 miles north of the border with Mexico and at the northern end of the Huachuca Mountains, next to the town of Sierra Vista. This ecological region contains components of Sky Island, Chihuahuan, and Sonoran systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent will be part of a 2 person field crew that will perform the following tasks:

• Assist with various monitoring and resource assessment projects on Fort Huachuca in support of the Sustainable Ranges Program.

• Collect qualitative and quantitative data including species composition, surface disturbance and cover, rangeland health indicators assessments, unpaved road characterization, and other information.

• Crew member will use skills in plant identification, sampling methods, data collection, land navigation and GPS.

• Work is entirely outdoors, consisting of driving four-wheel drive vehicles over rough roads in remote locations, data collection, extensive walking, and exposure to extreme weather (heat, dust, rain).

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

• BS/BA degree in range, botany, biology, ecology, forestry, or a related field.

• Applicants with coursework and/or experience in plant identification and vegetation sampling methods will also be considered.

• Familiarity with southwest ecology, ability to identify plants, experience with vegetation monitoring, and ability to work well with others.

• Experience

with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is desirable

• Familiar with compass and topographic maps

• Familiar with computer operation and data entry

 

• Successful candidates must be able to walk over uneven terrain, and work in inclement weather. The position will also require bending, climbing, and lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds.

• A valid U.S. driver’s license is required

WORK HOURS

Applicants should expect to work up to 40 hr/week Monday-Friday. The possibility exists for shortened workweeks due to inclement weather. Work may be made up on weekends if shortened Monday – Friday.

PAY RATE

Pay rate is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Range $15-22/hour. Housing is not provided.
