Intern - Food Science

The J.R. Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held organization with roots firmly planted in agriculture and agriculture-related businesses. These endeavors have been around for centuries and will continue to be a vital part of the global economy. Currently, we have a Food Science Internship position open with Food Group at the Technical Center in Caldwell, Idaho. This position is a full-time, 3-month, cooperative internship beginning in May 2019 and concluding in August 2019.

You will have an excellent opportunity to work with other food scientists in exciting areas of product development and novel plant-based ingredient processing. There will be opportunities to conduct your own research as assigned by food scientists based on education and experience level.
 
What you will do:
• Collaborate with cross functional teams to provide support in project research
• Participate in data collection and reporting.
• Assist with prototype development and experiment execution
• Perform routine laboratory analyses
• Make observations and provide feedback relative to experiments at all stages.
• Candidate must be willing to work at any level of project execution ranging from planning through clean-up
• Presentation of research finding to Technical Center at end of internship
 
What you already have:
• Candidate must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient use of Microsoft Office software with emphasis in strong EXCEL skills
• Ability to prioritize and manage workload assigned by supervising food scientist
• Demonstrate problem solving and decision making skills
• Ability and interest to work in laboratory and pilot plant environments
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Education:
• Required: Completed Junior year in Food Science or related field
• Preferred: Graduate or Graduate student with BS in Food Science or related field
• Overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4 point scale
• Required: Completion of coursework in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, general microbiology
• Preferred: Completion of coursework in food processing or bioprocessing, food analysis, food chemistry and food  engineering
 
Availability:
• May–August 2019
 
Duration
Full time 40 hr/week, 12 week minimum
Hours between 8am and 5pm.
