Wean Calf and Pasture Herdsman

Position Purpose: Responsible for the care of our client's calves in the Oklahoma weaned calf program. Also, responsible for pasture/pen maintenance and any recipients located in pastures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ability to organize daily work to be accomplished.
  • Follow weaning and calf health protocols.
  • Recording of daily records for weaned calves at the weaned calf facility.
  • Keep calves clean, comfortable, and free from stress, disease, and injury.
  • Ensure that calf feeders are in each pen, full, and clean.
  • Maintain identification and location of weaned calves at the weaned calf facility.
  • Communicate calf status including issues such as health concerns to the Production Manager, Team Leader, and WC Specialist daily.
  • Assist with communications of calf status to clients if needed. As well as showing calves to clients.
  • Assist facility maintenance such as cleaning pens, repairs and maintenance, and facilities neat and orderly.
  • All client calf information kept positive and confidential.
  • Ensure team members work safely.
  • Assist with donor care at the Oklahoma Trans Ova Genetics site.
  • Maintain any pastures/pen that Trans Ova leases-check fences, water, grass, and work with production team leader on fertilizer applications.
  • Ensure that all cows/calves are being fed properly, including feeding silage, ordering feed, and maintain hay inventories.
  • Assist inventories of calves by locations, recipients by pen, and medicine inventories.
  • Maintain a professional image reflective of Trans Ova's industry position.
  • Follow Trans Ova Genetics' policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
Education Requirements:
Minimum high school diploma or GED.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to operate skid loader, pickup and trailer, four-wheeler, tractor and manure spreader. Working conditions are primarily outdoor environment with extreme temperatures. Animals, especially if handled improperly, can cause injury. Normal working hours are 40 to 50 per week. Rotations are used for weekends and holidays.

Other skills/experience:
Prior cattle handling and husbandry experience is preferred.
