Mycobacteriology Medical Lab Technologist

The Microbiology Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Mycobacteriology Medical Laboratory Technologist II. The primary purpose of the Mycobacteriology lab is to provide reference and specialized testing services for the isolation and identification of all Mycobacterium species, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and other nontuberculous mycobacteria.
 
The Medical Laboratory Technologist II will provide full-time clinical support for the Mycobacteriology lab in the Microbiology unit. Responsibilities include:
  • Specimen processing, including sputum, blood, stool, and other clinical specimens
  • Culture set-up and examination
  • Bright-field and fluorescent microscopy per laboratory protocol
  • Identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other mycobacteria species using conventional and molecular methods
  • Providing training to other staff
  • Becoming cross-trained to perform the functions of other positions within the Mycobacteriology laboratory
  • Performing hands-on maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Applying quality assurance protocols and activities.
 
This position uses manual and automated methods and instrumentation, including pipetting and extensive use of computers, within a high containment laboratory (BSL-3). Working independently as well as with a team is required.

Education Requirements: In order to be considered, applicants must meet federal CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity laboratory.

High Complexity Testing Personnel must meet one of the following: 
  • Have an MD or DO and licensed to practice medicine in NC, OR
  • Have a doctoral degree in a chemical (aka Chemistry), physical, biological (aka Biology), or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, OR
  • Have a master's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, OR
  • Have a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, OR
  • Have an associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
