Communication Specialist Internship
The Greening Youth Foundation (GYF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture environmental stewardship among diverse youth and young adults, and expose them to careers in conservation careers. In partnership with the USDA Forest Service, this position will offer participants on the ground experience, mentorship, a professional network, and eligibility to receive a noncompetitive hiring authority certificate.

Position Description:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) seeks a Resource Assistant to support the Rocky Mountain Region in the priority goal area of Connecting with Communities and Environmental Analysis and Decision-Making. Responsibilities may include planning, organizing, and/or developing a range of products or tools. Projects and assignments will support outreach and engagement opportunities in support of the Region’s goal to be a better neighbor and connect with communities.
The RA may work on a variety of communication projects and products, such as:
- Communication – Help to develop communication products that will be used to share information with employees and the public.
- Engagement – Help to plan the logistics for meetings and workshops and assisting with meetings management.
- Technology – Use technology such as websites, SharePoint sites, interactive story maps and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to share communication updates and products.
- Survey – Conduct interviews and/or surveys to gain intelligence on communication and engagement needs.
- Outreach - Help more people awaken and strengthen their connection to the land, whether through employment, partnership, recreation, or other forms of engagement.
Overview of the Rocky Mountain Region:
The Region is comprised of 17 National Forests and 7 National Grasslands across Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas. The Region employs over 1,800 permanent employees. The Region serves people along a spectrum ranging from urban centers to rural communities. The Rocky Mountain Region supports three priority outcome goals: Creating and Maintaining Resilient Landscapes; Connecting with Communities; and Improving the Work Environment. Qualifications:
Successful candidate should have interpersonal and written communications skills; demonstrated good attention to detail/organization and excellent; general experience/comfort working with Microsoft Word and spreadsheets, other applications if possible such as story mapping products and website or SharePoint; and ability to multi task in a fast pace environment. A self-starter with an interest in communications and natural resources is highly desirable. Intern must be trustworthy, dependable and willing to work with people of different perspectives.
Additional qualifications:
- Must be between 18 and 35 years of age
- Must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in Communication, Management, Arts, Science, or a related field
- Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
- Must be able to pass a federal background check
Location: Rocky Mountain Regional Office, Office of Strategic Planning - Lakewood, CO
Compensation: $500 weekly stipend 12.50/hr.; non-competitive hiring status upon successful completion. A monthly housing stipend is available under certain conditions.
Housing: The Resource Assistant will be responsible for finding their own housing in Lakewood, CO. Lakewood is one of the many suburbs of the Denver metropolitan area. All facilities and public services associated with a major metropolitan area are available. Lakewood is less than an hour from Denver International Airport; has easy access to an incredible number of skiing, hiking and biking trails, and a multitude of recreational areas; and has at least four major malls, including an outlet mall nearby. Cultural opportunities include live theater, an active music scene, art and history museums, the Denver Zoo and Botanic Gardens, a variety of ethnic festivals and a full calendar of special community events that include professional and college sports. The Denver Metro area has a diverse and growing population with many institutes of higher learning and places of worship.
Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
