Summary
Leads efforts to collect and analyze data relating to timberlands and long-term planning. Maintains data and forest stands features for use in various management-related queries. Responsible for development of Forest Growth and Yield Models for the ownership. Leads deploying data with forestry staff and gaining agreement from staff on best models.

Duties and Responsibilities

·     Develop, organize, implement, and manage timber inventory
·     Interpret aerial photographs to determine timber types and other forest attributes
·     Develop and maintain timber stand shape files using Geographic Information Systems
·     Design specific maps to display various forest values
·     Work with forest managers to develop growth and yield models and outputs
·     Provide leadership and drive in completing the tasks listed above in a timely fashion
·     Develop inventories for timber investment modeling
·     Integrate simulation outputs from model into forest management
o  Improve representation of forest ecosystem (relationship between relevant plant and soil processes and atmosphere) to improve prediction of stand growth and forest development under changing environmental and management conditions
o  Model forestry practices, to assess wood, quantity, harvesting procedures and costs
·     Support Forest Managers with land management planning

Qualifications
·        Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university in Forestry, Natural Resources or sampling/mathematics field; minimum two years’ experience in forest inventory analysis, timber cruising, other sampling; or equivalent combination of education and experience
·        Experience with CACTOS, CRYPTOS, FORESEE, or other similar predictive analytical models. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite including Access
·        Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
·        Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
·        Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
·        Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis
·        Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
·        To perform this position successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ESRI software, relational databases, statistical programs, computer programming, word processing and Internet software
·        Must carry a valid California Driver’s License and be eligible to operate a company vehicle under company policy guidelines
·        The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet

Physical Requirements:
·        The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  
·        Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
·        Ability to navigate alone in remote mountainous regions using map and compass, may include hiking or walking long distances.
·        Position may require travel locally, usually by pickup, up to 25% of the time.
