ACE EPIC BLM OR: Multiple Indicator Monitoring Interns
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management in Prineville, Oregon, is seeking two Multiple Indicator Monitoring Interns for 30 weeks to assist the Bureau of Land Management to improve the quality of and streamline the process for renewing livestock grazing permits, by increasing local data about riparian vegetation. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic professionals with a deep interest in jointly advancing their career goals and the stewardship of Oregon's natural resources through purposeful fieldwork and research.
Start Date: 4/2019 or 5/2019
End Date: 10/2019 or 11/2019 (Dependent on start date)
Location: Prineville BLM District Office - Prineville, Oregon
Compensation: $480 per week living allowance (stipend) to cover Housing, Food, and incidentals. Typical workweek will be 8-10 hours/day, 4-5 days/week.
Not Provided: Housing is not provided. Intern will be responsible for obtaining their own housing.
Project Background and Objectives: The intern will aid in the collection of riparian vegetation data, in an effort to inventory and assess the conditions of existing riparian zones on BLM managed lands within the Prineville District. Increased data collections and analysis help inform decisions regarding the health of riparian zones managed by the BLM. This internship provides opportunity to see how land management principles are applied while balancing a multiple use agency direction.

Position Description: The position provides technical support and assistance with Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM) of stream channels and stream side vegetation protocol. The intern will aid in the collection of riparian vegetation data, in an effort to inventory and assess the conditions of existing riparian zones on BLM managed lands within the Prineville District. This information is necessary to monitor impacts of livestock and other large herbivores on riparian zones. Intern should be prepared to work in a field and office setting, both independently and as part of a small team.
Qualifications: Applicants should have degree in ecology, hydrology, rangeland management or related field. Candidates with Master's Degrees and an interest in a career in public lands management are strongly encouraged to apply. Resumes and cover letters must show detailed key project experiences.
Required:
- Interns must be US citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be 21 - 30 years of age. Applicants 31-35, with recent Masters Degree or pursuing Masters degree up to age 35, will be considered.
- Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
- Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record with ability to provide required documentation; (Driving record checks will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive ACE/Agency vehicles)
- Interns must have a high a high fitness level and an interest in camping, with potential for back-country work trips.
- Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision
- Database management and ArcGIS software experience
- Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts
- Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professional
- Must have riparian plant identification skills
- Must be comfortable communicating with the public or permittees, and be skilled at difficult conversations, or be willing to learn these skills
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions - heat during the summer and colder temperatures in the spring and fall.
Preferred Skills:
- Undergraduate degree in ecology, hydrology, rangeland management or a natural resource related field.
- GPS, Map, and Compass skills
- Computer programs particularly Microsoft Office
- Strong communication skills both orally and written
- Ability to drive large, 4x4 vehicles in rough terrain
- Knowledge of Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM) protocol
- Ambition and good at documenting notes in the field
- Knowledge of, or familiarity with, the local area
- A positive attitude
