Street Maintenance Worker 2/Landscape


*NOTE: A position in this classification will be represented by Teamsters Local 763.       


Under the direction of the Streets Maintenance Supervisor, train, assign, and supervise Streets maintenance personnel and/or perform skilled and specialized duties in the maintenance, operation, repair and construction of Streets landscape and hardscape facilities including mow strips, planted medians, right-of-way streetscape, sidewalks, and walkways. Assist in the evaluation and selection of equipment, tools and contracts; properly and safely operate heavy and light vehicles, specialized equipment, hand and power tools. Maintain and repair irrigation systems; apply pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals to vegetation.


Train, assign, direct and review the work of assigned streets maintenance personnel; demonstrate proper methods of landscaping, equipment operation, and other more complex operations; demonstrate proper and safe equipment and tools operation.  Research and assemble information related to the evaluation, selection and purchase of grounds maintenance equipment, tools and supplies; meet with vendors and contractors as required, and assist in the testing, evaluation and selection of equipment, tools and contractors. Maintain landscape areas; evaluate soil and other conditions and select proper flowers and other vegetation for areas to be planted; cut, remove, replant and transplant trees. Treat disease and pest conditions; safely spray landscaped areas with pesticides according to WSDA regulations. Install and maintain irrigation systems utilizing electrical, hydraulic and other state-of-the-art components; repair lines, valves and heads; program irrigation controls for proper and efficient operation; diagnose, repair or replace electrical irrigation controller malfunctions. Mix, pour and finish cement and asphalt to construct, repair, resurface and maintain concrete and asphalt walkways, curbs and ramps. Perform general duties such as, constructing, installing and repairing street furniture. Blow, sweep and wash, sidewalks and maintain in a clean, safe and orderly condition; pick up litter and garbage. Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment including tractors, trucks, back hoe, large mowers, skid steer loader, power edger, weed eater, hedge trimmer, power sweeper, sod cutter, grinders, pesticide and paint sprayers, turf vacuum, blowers, aerator, chemical sprayers, chain saw, drills and power and hand tools. Perform routine maintenance and repair to grounds equipment and vehicles, including maintaining filters, hoses, fuel, oil and other fluid levels. Maintain a variety of records including worked performed, fuel consumption and mileage, parts and materials inventory, purchases, equipment use, security, safety and vandalism reports; provide input into purchase of equipment, tools and supplies. Supervise and control traffic at work sites by setting up warning signs and flagging. Operate snow and ice removal vehicles during hazardous conditions. Work for extended periods of time and be on 24-hour call for emergencies such as flooding, system failures, traffic accidents, and snow removal. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two year’s experience performing comparable work required in the Streets Maintenance II position.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with commercial driver’s license endorsement or ability to obtain within one year from date of hire. Possess a valid Washington State Public Pesticide Applicators license or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment. Possess a valid first aid certificate issued by an authorized agency or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
