Non-career Wildlife Assistant 6 - CWD - Dickinson County

Non-Career Wildlife Assistants (NCWA's) are hired during the autumn primarily to assist with the collection of biological data from hunter-harvested deer. The purpose of this work is to monitor for diseases and assess physical condition and age structure of the deer harvest. Sampling goals for chronic wasting disease (CWD) necessitate additional help at DNR check stations to handle the extra workload. NCWA's will age harvested deer, measure antler size, and collect deer heads for testing. They will record information on sample tags and by using mobile devices. An important component of the work is to answer hunter questions and provide accurate information on CWD. Much of this work will occur at DNR offices but some time may be spent at meat processors, taxidermists, or drop box locations. During lulls in deer check activity, NCWA's may work with permanent staff on facility and equipment maintenance or other wildlife population management functions.
