New Mexico State Forestry - Socorro Forester Position

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of the Socorro District Timber Management Officer (TMO) position is to conduct and implement multiple forestry programs, advise State and private cooperators on best forestry practices to meet land management objectives, and implement Federal cost share programs with local cooperators. The position also conducts wildfire suppression; timber sale regulation activities; promotion, monitoring, and inspection of American Tree Farm System activities; and promotion of FIREWISE USA communities. The TMO provides stewardship program guidance and assists partner agencies, landowners, and stakeholders with planning and implementation of large scale forest restoration projects.


How does it get done?

The Timber Management Officer (TMO) prepares forest management and stewardship practice plans for State and private landowners, land/natural resource management agencies, and partners. They direct and supervise the District timber resource program, including advising State and private cooperators on the best forest practices to meet their land/timber management goals, assisting communities with development of viable, value-added forest product industries and projects, and monitor and inspect commercial timber harvest operations to insure compliance with Forestry Division statutes and regulations. The TMO prepares various grant applications and provides assistance with management of various grants. The TMO makes periodic project site visits to ensure compliance with forest management/stewardship practice plans and accomplishment of on-the-ground project goals. They provide forestry information to community members to advance understanding of natural resource management, wildfire management, and urban and community forestry activities. The TMO maintains NWCG wildland fire position qualifications and related physical fitness in order to participate in wildland fire assignments such as engine crew member or single resource.


Who are the customers?

Primary customers are private landowners, cooperating State and Federal land and natural resource management agencies, and other non-Federal landowners such as local governments.


Ideal Candidate

They can prioritize and maintain an organized workload. They can articulate technical topics both verbally and in writing. They have forest management or timber sales experience such that they can collect and compile accurate and complete forest inventory data for assessment or analysis.  They have experience preparing forestry technical documents such as timber harvest plans, forest/watershed treatment/restoration prescriptions, and project work plans.


Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science and/or Ecology and one (1) year of experience in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science or Ecology. Five (5) years of active duty service in the Armed Forces will substitute for the required education and experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Express ideas both orally and in writing. Demonstrate an understanding of forest management techniques.


Working Conditions

Extensive travel & work in rough terrain. Work irregular or extended hours including evening, weekends, & holidays. May be exposed to a variety or weather conditions, including conditions associated with forest & wildfire management activities. Weekend/holiday Work.
