The Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Public Health Division (PHD), Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL), Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention Section in Portland, OR is recruiting for a part-time Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) Public Health Physician to provide supervision, epidemiologic support and medical consultation to the Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention (ACDP) Section. ACDP works with local health departments, other states and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent and control communicable diseases and outbreaks of acute diseases in Oregon.
 
What will you do?
As the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) Public Health Physician, you will serve as ELC principal investigator and provide overall direction and scientific leadership across the entire ELC program. You will also serve as the principal investigator for the Oregon Emerging Infection Program’s (EIP) Influenza and RSV surveillance activities. You will be responsible for the following:
  • Supervise work of selected ACDP personnel and interns funded by ELC and EIP grants.
  • Ensure that quality data collection, analysis and presentation occur in a timely manner to meet project deadlines.
  • Direct, review and approve the preparation of the different surveillance system and research study budgets.
  • Determine research and surveillance priorities and seek funding as needed.
  • Submit routine interim and final reports required by CDC and other funding agencies.
  • Review grant applications and seek other sources of funding as appropriate.
  • Serve as medical consultant and contact person in the agency for influenza and other respiratory viruses and vaccine-preventable diseases, representing ACDP within and outside Oregon.
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with other agencies, universities, laboratories, public and private health care providers, local health departments and colleagues in other states.
  • Serve on local, state and national working groups or advisory committees regarding influenza and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Track pertinent legislative bills.
  • Testify to committees on effects of proposed legislation.
  • Respond in writing and person to legislative requests for information.
  • Draft changes in Oregon administrative rules as needed.
  • Develop legislative concepts and policy options.

What are we looking for?
  • Must meet or be eligible to meet the State of Oregon licensing requirements for a medical doctor at the time of hire and obtain State of Oregon licensure within six months of hire AND must have advanced training in epidemiology.
  • Significant epidemiologic experience.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with IRB protocols.
  • Experience writing grants.
  • Experience writing and publishing scientific manuscripts.
  • Experience coordinating large projects with many stakeholders.
  • Experience serving as a spokesperson for media requests.
  • Experience in advancing health equity, addressing systemic health disparities and collaborating with diverse, vulnerable and underrepresented populations.
