About the Department 
The Strategy, Planning & Organization Operations (SP&OO) team works with each department across the organization to support the CEO and NYRR leadership in strategy formulation, growth plan execution, and project implementation. The team provides in-depth analytical support in evaluating existing operations and new business opportunities and manages cross-functional project teams to execute the many action items/special projects that have been designed to help NYRR continue to reach its strategic objectives, mission and goals. 
 
About the Position 
The Intern, Environmental Sustainability supports the execution of NYRR’s organization-wide sustainability strategy. This role will provide research, planning, and implementation support for sustainability initiatives across all NYRR spaces: office headquarters; RUNCENTER retail space near Columbus Circle; public spaces where NYRR operates races and events; warehouse space. In addition to implementing sustainable practices, this role will help to identify innovative and impactful ideas to improve sustainability across all aspects of the organization. 
 
Brief Overview (position summary in 500 words or less): 
This Internship is at least 3 months to start. Can extend through June or longer. Immediate availability (ASAP). The incumbent will work 10-20 hours per week and reports to the Senior Manager of Strategy, Planning & Organization Operations.   
 
Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties): 
 
  • Project manage the implementation of sustainability initiatives 
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to coordinate execution of new/improved sustainable operations 
  • Identify innovative and impactful new ideas for sustainability at NYRR via research, analysis of internal data, and brainstorms with NYRR team members 
  • Support sustainability data collection, analysis and reporting 
  • Communicate status, next steps, and results of sustainability initiatives to NYRR leadership and organization-wide stakeholders 
 
Examples Assignments & Projects for the Intern, Environmental Sustainability: 
 
  • Research options and plan implementation of composting at office and RUNCENTER 
  • Research options and plan implementation of sustainable options for internal supplies (office supplies; kitchen amenities; etc.) 
  • Support internal ‘Green Team’ coordination 
  • Support design and content development for external-facing sustainability webpage  
  • Other projects to be determined to support research, planning, and implementation of sustainability initiatives 
 
 
Job Requirements: 
 
Experience: 
  • Minimum 2-3 years of relevant experience, for example: implementing sustainable practices; project managing cross-functional initiatives; supporting organization operations improvements 
 
Education & Certifications: 
  • Minimum undergraduate degree; undergraduate or graduate training in sustainability a plus 
 
Skills and Attributes: 
  • Demonstrated passion for learning about and implementing activities that support environmental sustainability 
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple departments/teams to support implementation of initiatives  
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to develop communications and presentations to update NYRR leadership and other stakeholders on project status 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word 
  • Passion for NYRR’s mission
