Engineering Intern - North Central Region

The Opportunity
WSDOT has several exciting engineering internships available this summer throughout the state. These are unique opportunities for currently enrolled students looking to apply their classroom training to real world scenarios. The Transportation Engineer (TE) internships provide the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of engineering procedures, concepts, and techniques in an on-the-job environment.

What to Expect
Under the direct guidance and mentorship of an experienced Engineer, TE Interns will assist in a variety of entry-level engineering duties, to include:
  • Construction office engineering with tasks such as checking calculations of elevations, grades, earthwork, etc.
  • Field inspections with tasks such as collecting material samples, performing materials testing, preparing field note records, and collecting tickets.
  • Preparation of contract change orders.
  • Preparation of design reports; traffic data, access reports, environmental documentation, and research.
  • Preparation and conformance inspections of plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Compilation of final records.
  • Collection of data and general reporting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program for Civil Engineering or another closely related field of study.
  • Knowledge of engineering plans and principles.
  • Proficiency with computers, office software, and engineering software.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 30 pounds of various material and equipment.
  • Ability to safely traverse uneven terrain.
  • Ability and willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites throughout assigned geographic area.
 
Important Notes
  • Internships are temporary employment opportunities, expected to last 3 – 6 months, for students working toward an undergraduate degree (RCW 43.06.420).
  • This recruitment will be used to fill multiple internship positions throughout the North Central Region, which includes Chelan, Douglas, Grant, and Okanogan counties.
