Cal Alumni Association (CAA) is looking for a staff accountant to join our expanding accounting team. As an important member of the accounting team, the Staff Accountant is responsible for CAA scholarship accounting activities including recording revenue from donors, issuing scholarship checks to students, reconciling investments and scholarship related general ledger accounts. The Staff Accountant is the main liaison for scholarship matters between the accounting staff, CAA Scholarship program staff, and the UC Berkeley’s personnel. The Staff Accountant is responsible for accounting projects and financial analysis as assigned by CFO.
SUPERVISION AND LOCATION
The Staff Accountant position reports to the CFO and is located in Berkeley, CA near the UC Berkeley campus and is accessible by BART.

Responsibilities: 

Accounting for Scholarship Programs
  • Conduct monthly close and prepare monthly reports for Scholarship programs, including:
  • Updating and reconciling investment accounts

  • Calculating net assets released from restrictions for Scholarship programs

  • Preparing journal entries

  • Preparing monthly Scholarship financial reports and donor reports, as needed
  • Assist with scholarship check disbursements to students

  • Serve as liaison between CAA and UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, UC Berkeley Foundation, and University Development & Alumni Relations, including, but not limited to
  • Answering telephone and email inquiries

  • Attending meetings

  • Researching historical data for information requested, resolving discrepancies if any

  • Preparing scholarship fund schedules and reports as requested
  • Assist with forecasting endowment payout amounts

  • Assist with preparing scholarship endowment reports

  • Assist with all matters related to Scholarship programs.
 
General Accounting
  • Coordinate the annual audit process for scholarship and payroll matters, including:
  • Preparing requested materials for auditors

  • Working with auditors during on-site fieldwork to answer questions, provide additional information as needed

  • Addressing subsequent post-fieldwork questions
  • Assist with collecting and researching data for budget preparation and monitoring

  • Assist with month-end close, as needed

  • Assist Senior Accountant and CFO on special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or business-related field

  • Working knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Minimum of three years of accounting experience using computers and accounting software

  • Strong work ethic, well organized with excellent attention to detail. Ability to work efficiently, multi-task, and meet deadlines

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and handle sensitive data with care

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent computer skills, including using accounting software programs, Excel, Access, and Word, and Google applications 

  • Able to interact effectively with diverse groups of people

  • Ability to manage and prioritize projects under difficult time constraints

  • Must submit to and pass a criminal background check and FBI/DOJ fingerprint scan.
Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge and familiarity of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Cal campus

  • Not-for-profit and fund accounting experience

  • Experience using Blackbaud’s Financial Edge accounting software

  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now, Expensify, and Zenefits programs.
Salary and Benefits: 

The position is classified as full-time (37.5 hours per week), non-exempt. The pay rate is $30.00/hour to $31.00/hour.
