Camp Counselor

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: CAMP COUNSELOR 
The Canyon Field School (CFS) is a collaborative environmental education program co-sponsored by National Park Service, and the Grand Canyon Conservancy—the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon Conservancy established the Camp Counselor Program to familiarize and train college students and/or recent graduates within the field of Outdoor Education. Counselors participate and assist in lesson planning, and carry out supervisor-assigned tasks to prepare and execute outdoor education programs at Grand Canyon National Park. To preserve the integrity of the educational experience, and for safety, CFS strives for no greater than a 1:15 counselor-to-student ratio in the field and in camp. Camp counselors are employees of the Grand Canyon Conservancy and under the direct supervision of the CFS Camp Program Manager. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties vary with the workload, and could include, but are not limited to, the tasks listed below. 

• Counselors will spend their days collecting camp materials, preparing for upcoming programs, assisting with camp logistics, and helping facilitate education programs
• Depending on NPS staffing, counselors may have the opportunity to develop a project which enhances both CFS’s programs and the counselor’s professional development
• Counselors may have opportunities to assist with activity and curriculum development for CFS programs
• Work may require weekends, extended hours, and overnight camping with youth groups—with routine exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS
• Interest in a career in informal or environmental education
• Willing to commit at least 4 months full time to work and live at Grand Canyon National Park
• Have a strong work ethic, good organizational skills, and the ability to work independently
• Possession of CPR, Wilderness First Aid, and/or Wilderness First Responder Certifications preferred

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Current university student or recent graduate; preferred majors are natural science-related
• One year of experience working with children, especially middle and high school-aged children
• Must have a valid drivers license
• Ability to effectively interact with others
• Display effective listening skills
• Establish rapport and instill trust
• Maintain a positive attitude and sense of humor
• Inclusive and sensitive to diverse viewpoints and communication styles
• Have experiences in outdoor activities, such as hiking and camping

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Must be in good physical condition with no limitations that would affect one’s ability to participate in difficult hikes into the Grand Canyon, up to ten miles on back-country trails with steep elevation
• Must be able to lift sixty pounds
• Must be able to be active for hours, or extended days, at a time while maintaining a positive and enthusiastic presence
• Be comfortable being active in varying temperatures and weather conditions
• Be comfortable sleeping overnight outdoors t in a raised platform canvas tent
