Crew Member, Aquatic Invasive Species Strike Team

Title: Crew Member, Aquatic Invasive Species Strike Team – 3 positions available
Position Type: Seasonal appointment (late May – late September). Full time (40 hours/week). Mandatory multi-day training will be held in late May.
Program Description: The NYS OPRHP Aquatic Strike Team works independently towards the Agency’s Invasive Species Management strategy. The strike team primarily performs manual invasive plant removals, as well as surveys, public outreach and other activities as assigned on State Park lands. The Strike Team will travel extensively using agency vehicles across assigned OPRHP Regions (see https://parks.ny.gov/regions/ for OPRHP regional delineations).

A total of 3 crew member positions are available with the Aquatic Strike Team. Work conditions may include uneven terrain, heat, cold, and exposure to poison ivy, thorns, ticks, and biting insects. Appropriate protective equipment will be provided.

The Aquatic Invasive Species Strike Team will cover the following regions within the Great Lakes Basin: Allegany, Niagara, Genesee, Finger Lakes, Central, and Thousand Islands. This team will report to De Veaux Woods State Park, located in Niagara Falls in the Niagara Region, for weekly briefing and debriefing. Position requires frequent overnight travel and camping.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Manual and mechanical removal of invasive species
  • Surveying, identifying, and mapping invasive populations
  • Field data collection and entry using mobile devices
  • Post-removal site monitoring
  • Occasional program support for invasive species education and outreach events
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Habitat restoration
Qualifications:
  • Coursework related to aquatic ecology, environmental studies, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as forestry, conservation biology, etc.
  • Experience with GPS/GIS and ecological monitoring methods
  • Ability to maintain a good attitude while performing physical work in varying weather conditions (spring, summer, and fall).
  • Some knowledge of invasive New York flora and fauna
  • Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges
  • Ability to interact professionally with a wide array of Parks staff and patrons
  • Backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace experience a plus
  • Must have some personal camping equipment and be comfortable camping weekly for some or most of the field season. Tents and cook sets will be provided for use throughout the season.
Compensation:
Pay rate is $13.84/hour, plus meal per-diem when traveling (averages $200-250 per week when traveling).
Position does not include health care benefits or paid leave.
