Internship – Building Awareness for Radiation Protection of Patients

Position and Grade: Internship – Building Awareness for Radiation Protection of Patients in the Radiation
Organizational Unit: Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety (NSRW) Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS)
Duty Station: Vienna, Austria
Start/Duration of Appointment: June/July 2020, 1 year

In addition to the IAEA's general internship program, IAEA Programs sponsors several internships each year in non-Safeguards departments of the IAEA. These internships are one year in length and eligibility is limited to US citizens. Benefits of these internships include:

Main Purpose
The main purpose of the internship is to provide support in the area of radiation protection of patients and medical staff, and in this way develop own skills and competences. The scope of work will include development of online surveys, data collection forms to study patient dose from different medical modalities, analyzing collected data and preparing reports and scientific publications. The intern should also develop tools for improving knowledge and awareness among medical professionals, patients and public, such as posters, leaflets, videos, e-learning materials, etc.

Tasks / Key Results Expected
• Support in development of new tools for improving knowledge and awareness available to Member States.
• Assist with development of new e-learning material.
• Contribute to developing surveys to support drafting of scientific papers for publication

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of types of ionizing radiation, radiation interaction and biological effects.
• Knowledge of medical uses of ionizing radiation, image formation and patient exposure would be advantage
• Skills of using software for statistical analyses and online survey forms.

Qualifications and Experience
• University degree in Physics, Medical Physics, or a relevant field.

Applicant Eligibility
• Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
• Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
• Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
• Excellent written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian) an asset.
• Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
