TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Seasonal, not to exceed 800hrs
OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will support regional environmental stewardship staff in planning and implementing invasive species management related projects to meet regional and statewide goals. This will include but may not be limited to: survey, remove, and/or monitor invasive species (aquatic and terrestrial plants, forest pest/pathogens), collect and manage field data using standardized methods, maintain up-to-date project information in statewide databases, respond promptly to statewide Early Detection/Rapid Response needs, organize and participate in education and outreach events, perform native planting/restoration duties. The use of power tools, brush cutters, and various hand tools will be required. Overnight travel may be necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A degree or experience in forestry, environmental studies, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as aquatic ecology, conservation biology, etc. A working knowledge of GPS/GIS and ecological monitoring methods. Ability to work, and maintain a positive attitude, while performing physical work in a variety of conditions. A strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges.
Preferred Qualifications:
One year or more experience with invasive species identification and control methods. Backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace experience.
OPERATING NEEDS:
-Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver's license as a term and condition of employment.
-Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
-Must be able to train and supervise others.
-Must be able to read plans, specifications and diagnose problems.
