U.S. Army Immunology Post-Master's/Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) carries out research to develop infectious disease countermeasures and to benefit brain health through studies to enhance our understanding of sleep, traumatic brain injury prevention/treatment and psychological resilience. The Immunology Core within the Malaria Biologics Branch is a core facility dedicated to the immunoprofiling of immune responses to infectious diseases and vaccinations.
As an ORISE participant under the Immunology Core you will be given an opportunity to showcase your experience in extracellular vesicles (EV). In collaboration with the lab chief, you will develop new analytical methods for the detection and characterization of EVs. During your appointment you will gain an in-depth understanding of multiplex testing platforms (Luminex, Mesoscale) and flow cytometry. The disease models will be malaria, bacterial and viral diseases, and the study of immunity impacted by circadian rhythm. In addition to the above platforms, your learning objectives will include gaining a working knowledge of:
  1. Design of experiments
  2. Small lab animal handling
  3. Malaria microscopic diagnostic techniques
  4. Cell Imaging and proteomic analysis of samples
  5. Laboratory and project management
  6. Public speaking and successful grant writing

Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
