Externships in Advanced Small Animal Medicine and Surgery

Care Animal Hospital of Arlington Heights (IL) is pleased to offer externships for students interested in learning how veterinarians can better serve clients and patients by developing specialty-class knowledge and skills in a general practice setting.

Care Animal Hospital is a small animal practice that prides itself on its ability to provide treatment for complex medical conditions as well as advanced soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery. Our veterinarians work as a team on challenging cases and make use of a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment, including: a complete in-house lab, digital radiography, ultrasound, CT scanner, video endoscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and CO2 laser. In addition, the practice offers rehabilitation and pain management services, using our K-Laser therapy laser, PulseVet Shockwave, therapy pool, underwater treadmill, and MediVet Regenerative Therapy. Care Animal Hospital is also one of the only clinics in the Chicagoland area to provide advanced canine reproduction services, with on-site semen freezing and storage facilities.

Care Animal Hospital is located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The practice has been serving Arlington Heights and the surrounding communities since 1970 and we are fortunate that Care’s dedicated clientele expects the same compassionate and progressive veterinary care that we love to provide.

Care’s doctors believe that mentorship is critical for young veterinarians - to help keep them pointed in the right direction as they develop their skills and hone their instincts in the early years of practice.

During your externship you will work closely with our doctors and follow cases from start to finish. You will be supervised and coached by our doctors as you interact with clients, take patient histories, observe and assist with diagnostics and treatments, and discuss challenging cases. You will learn how to perform a physical exam, use various diagnostic tools and interpret results, learn surgical preparation and monitoring, and further develop your communication skills.
