DEPARTMENT AND POSITION SUMMARY:
Americares Emergency Programs department is responsible for our disaster preparedness, response, and recovery programs. Americares responds to more than 30 disasters around the world, including the West Africa Ebola crisis, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, 2017 and 2018 hurricanes and typhoons, and complex ongoing emergencies like the Venezuelan refugee crisis. The Emergency Programs department directs the delivery of medicines and supplies to treat illnesses and injuries caused by the disaster; supports the restoration of health care services in affected areas; addresses the psychosocial and mental health needs of disaster survivors. The Emergency Preparedness team focuses on conducting training and developing tools for health focused organizations around the world to prepare for future disasters.
The Emergency Preparedness internship provides an opportunity for undergraduate students pursuing careers in the fields of public health, health care and/or emergency management.
The internship will touch on all phases of the Emergency Program, with a focus on preparedness. Responsibilities consist of both short and long-term assignments. Activities will include researching and developing documents for clinic preparedness, continuing work on connecting climate change with health network resiliency and supporting program growth.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist with development of materials for clinic preparedness.
  2. Assist with logistics for online trainings.
  3. Support project growth for preparedness initiatives.
  4. Maintain program maps and evaluation trackers.
  5. Assist with ongoing project management.
  6. Assist with other Emergency Program projects.

SKILLS:
Preferred
  1. Knowledge of emergency management or public health.
  2. Experience developing documents for public dissemination.
  3. Experience developing or organizing workshops/trainings is an advantage.
Required
  1. Ability to work independently and in team environments.
  2. Experience/interest in emergency planning, response and/or recovery.
  3. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  4. Experience in MS Office software.
 
EXPERIENCE GAINED
  1. Experience in project management, program development and evaluation.
  2. Exposure to emergency management and public health sectors.
  3. Understanding of international disaster risk reduction principles and frameworks including Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals, and Sphere Standards.
  4. Opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and balance competing workflow priorities.
