Systems Engineer I/II/III

Provides technical support for various enterprise systems supporting the County’s Offices and Departments. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and operation of a variety of compute (physical, virtual, and cloud) and storage resources, enterprise software, and monitoring tools and related components. Technical support is provided for a wide range of hardware, software operating systems, applications, appliances, and services.
  • Assists with the administration of physical and virtual server environments consisting of Windows, RedHat Linux, VMWare, O365, and Cloud systems.
  • Administers and supports the Microsoft Exchange O365 environment.
  • Provides Tier 2 incident support consisting of advanced troubleshooting of end-user and system issues, administrative tasks, and configuration changes.
  • Assists with installing, configuring, maintaining, upgrading, and routine troubleshooting and repair assistance for system hardware and peripherals including servers, network printers, and NAS systems.
  • Participates in periodic and emergency patching efforts, using tools such as WSUS, SCCM, and Ansible.
  • Assists with administration of backup solutions to include monitoring backups, configuring backup jobs, and restoring data.
  • Works closely with the Customer Support team and assists with diagnoses as needed.
  • Assists with managing Incident and Task queues; completes tickets in a thorough and timely manner.
  • In support of technology processes, troubleshooting processes, and enterprise equipment, assists with the drafting and updating of configuration documentation, knowledge articles, and procedure documents.
  • Participates in on-call rotation, providing off-hours support as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Additional Level II Functions:
  • Administers the physical and virtual server environments consisting of Windows, RedHat Linux, VMWare, O365, and Cloud systems. 
  • Administers a hybrid Microsoft Exchange environment consisting of on premises and O365 Exchange.
  • Installs, configures, maintains, upgrades, troubleshoots, and repairs enterprise system hardware and peripherals including servers, network printers, NAS systems, and backup systems.
  • Assists with Tier 3 level incident and problem support consisting of advanced troubleshooting of end-user and system issues, configuration changes/modifications, internal coordination, remediation, and vendor engagement.
  • Administers and maintains backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Performs scheduled and emergency patching using tools like WSUS, SCCM, and Ansible.
  • Provides system level and batch programming/scripting as needed.
  • Monitors and uses system management tools to gather hardware and software inventories, install software, and remotely manage enterprise systems.
  • Uses Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) software to manage incoming work requests, incidents, tasks, and problems.
  • In support of technology processes, troubleshooting processes, and enterprise systems, writes and updates configuration documentation, knowledge articles, and procedure documents.
  • Assists with enterprise license management and compliance.
  • Assists with Demand/Capacity Planning and system designs.
Additional Level III Functions:
  • Analyzes data operations center system lifecycle, demand, and capacity needs. Plans for the maintenance, upgrades, and migrations of these systems ensuring that best practices and County standards are followed.
  • Serves as data operations center, technical subject matter expert for system implementations, system designs, installations, and refreshes of supported technology stacks.
  • Configures and administers enterprise systems/infrastructure including NetApps, Veritas NetBackup, Oracle Exadata, and HP StoreOnce.
  • Creates and maintains backup strategies and disaster recovery strategies for enterprise systems.
  • Develops and documents County technology standards, knowledge base articles, requirements, and configurations.
  • Oversees enterprise license management and compliance.
  • Manages vendors and contractors engaged in providing escalated support; assists vendors and contractors engaged in project delivery.
  • Provides training and assists other IT technical staff as appropriate.
Qualifications
To qualify for a Systems Engineer at any level:
  • High school diploma or equivalent education required. Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Experience with physical and virtual server environments to include Windows, RedHat Linux, VMWare, O365, and Cloud.
  • Experience with ticket-based Service Desk software system.
  • Understanding of ITIL practices: Configuration, Change, and Problem Management.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including the ability to articulate user needs in technical and non-technical terms.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, County staff, and contractors.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the education and experience requirements above.
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.
To qualify for a Systems Engineer I:
  • Minimum three (3) years of direct, hands-on experience with installing, supporting, troubleshooting, and maintaining enterprise systems in a large, multi-user, multi-application environment.
To qualify for a Systems Engineer II:
  • Minimum five (5) years of direct, hands-on experience with installing, supporting, troubleshooting, and maintaining enterprise systems in a large, multi-user, multi-application environment.
  • Must have experience with virtualization technologies, Cloud technologies, system monitoring/alerting, performance tuning, and resource optimization.
  • Understanding and experience with ITIL practices: Incident, Configuration, Change, and Problem Management.
To qualify for a Systems Engineer III:
  • Minimum seven (7) years direct, hands-on experience with installing, supporting, troubleshooting, and maintaining enterprise systems in a large, multi-user, multi-application environment.
  • Must be able to serve as and have experience as a high-level, technical resource to IT staff and experience performing needs analysis, project planning, and resource scheduling.
  • Significant experience with ITIL Incident, Problem and Change Management processes and principles.
Licenses/Certificates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) certification or have the ability to successfully obtain within ninety (90) days of employment.
Work Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office environment; some travel may be required. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Participates in on-call rotation.
