Intern - Interpretable Machine Learning RD Undergrad Year Round

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an Intern - Interpretable Machine Learning R&D Undergrad Year Round.
As an Interpretable Machine Learning intern, you will help with our interpretable machine learning research and development in the Digital Foundations and Mathematics Department. You will work with a mentor to apply state of the art interpretable machine learning algorithms to a variety of application domains such as hydrogen storage. This includes a new interpretable machine learning algorithm called Averaged Weights for Explainable Machine Learning (AWE-ML) developed at Sandia. This project may involve learning about the data sources and helping process the raw data to create features that are more interpretable by a human. It may also involve comparing and evaluating the quality of the explanations provided by several different state of the art interpretable algorithms.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Implement and optimize new interpretable machine learning algorithms
  • Apply interpretable machine learning algorithms to hydrogen storage
  • Present results of machine learning analyses and work with domain experts to analyze the data
  • Apply active learning algorithms to predict optimal experiments for improving a model

Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship
Additional Requirements:
  • Experience in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, C, C++, Java, Go, Perl, Ruby, or R
Qualifications We Desire
  • Strong technical skills including: C/C++/Python programming skills
  • Experience in data analysis, machine learning or data science
  • Strong mathematical background in statistics and probability
  • Experience debugging software and knowledge of software engineering design principles
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills
  • Applicants must be comfortable working in a collaborative environment as part of a team of engineers and researchers
  • The ideal candidate will have an interest in or experience with conducting self-driven research
About Our Team
Our department (Digital Foundations & Mathematics) develops and maintains multiple technical capabilities. We develop and apply tools for the formal verification of digital systems, for electrical modeling and simulation analyses, and we develop computing accelerators for extreme environments. We are always interested in candidates with cross-disciplinary skillsets who can contribute to one or more of our programs.
The formal verification activities include formal methods analysis of hardware and software; modeling and simulation of digital or software systems; synthesis of hardware (digital logic) or software to meet formal specifications; binary analysis (developing a custom lifter capability); and development of specialized software utilizing advanced mathematics to meet customer needs.
The electrical modeling and simulation work includes printed circuit board level analysis of new systems in extreme environments, development of new capabilities in Sandia's internal PSPICE solver Xyce, and support for the Sandia device modelling teams.
Our work on computing accelerators includes both modeling and designing novel fault tolerant architectures and new analog neuromorphic in-memory computing accelerators.
Our department consists mostly of PhDs with backgrounds in computer science, analysis of programming languages and domain specific languages, high-performance computing, physics, electrical engineering, electrical circuit modeling & simulation & analysis, and neuromorphic computing architectures. We collaborate and team closely with organizations across Sandia and a broad spectrum of external partners.

Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
