Risk Analysis Postdoctoral Appointee

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a creative and hardworking Risk Analysis Postdoctoral Appointee who is passionate about and wants to conduct fire risk research. The selected candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, researchers, and staff dedicated to finding solutions in a variety of research areas. We currently support high-consequence risk work in alternative fuels, nuclear power, and other critical infrastructures.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Perform independent research in various risk related technologies including probabilistic risk assessment, Bayesian statistics, and other work related to risk management;
  • Help build and develop open source software tools to help users evaluate risks in high consequence systems;
  • Assess performance and economics of infrastructure systems for alternative fuels;
  • Work with industry, government, and lab teams to provide technical justification to help improve safety codes and standards;
  • Communicate your findings to colleagues, customers, and the larger scientific community through presentations, technical reports, and journal articles.
Qualifications We Require
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field;
  • Experience with various risk methodologies such as numerical analysis, probabilistic risk analysis, Bayesian analysis, or probabilistic reasoning;
  • A record of first-author or co-authored scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
Qualifications We Desire
  • Proven experience developing and utilizing risk tools and methodologies;
  • Experience with alternative fuels such as hydrogen or natural gas;
  • Experience in the nuclear power area;
  • Experience with uncertainty analysis;
  • System modeling and assessment experience;
  • Experience with a programming language (such as Python);
  • Experience with safety codes and standards;
  • Course work in risk assessment.
About Our Team
The Fire, Risk, & Transportation Systems department conducts risk related work to high consequence systems including alternative fuels, nuclear facilities, critical infrastructures, advanced energy systems, transportation and packaging of nuclear materials, and other national security related work. Risk work in this department currently supports research into probabilistic risk assessments and analysis, fire risk analysis, and other risk related work. The focus of the department's efforts is on research related to operational risk and risk analysis of high-consequence engineered systems to various threats including system failure mechanisms, reliability issues, kinetic threats, and naturally occurring events. The department's client base includes the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other federal and non-federal entities.

Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
