R&D Systems Engineer - Weapon Technical Assessment (Early/Mid-Career)

What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you looking for an opportunity to impact the safety, security and reliability of the nation’s nuclear deterrent? 
If so, you may be the R&D Systems Engineer we are seeking to join our diverse team focused on ensuring a viable nuclear deterrent. You will assess conceptual and realized design details as they pertain to the implementation of nuclear weapon design and qualification principles. Other activities include participation within various integrated teams (e.g., Weapon Assessment Teams, Significant Finding Investigation committees, Weapon Project Teams, DoD, and NNSA).
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Create and document technical justifications and rationale.
  • Develop technical subject matter expertise while working closely with peers at Sandia, Los Alamos National Lab, Pantex, and Lawrence Livermore National Lab.
  • Assess electrical and electro-mechanical component design, analysis, production and testing.
  • Review and assess requirements and requirement evidence.
  • Assess risk in production and test anomalies.
  • Analyze test planning and execution and data analysis throughout the lifetime of a weapon
  • Perform hazards/safety/failure analysis (e.g., root cause analysis, fault tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis).
  • Utilize knowledge in nuclear weapon design, analysis, or testing.
This position could require travel to Pantex (TX), LANL (NM), LLNL (CA), SNL/CA, and KCNSC (MO)


Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM field plus five (5) years of experience; 
  • or an advanced degree in a related field
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
  • Ability to participate as requested in random polygraph testing

About Our Team

The Independent Technical Assessment Group assesses the objective technical evidence regarding the degree to which surety-related products and processes meet technical customer requirements and expectations, weapon-related process requirements, and helps ensure all technical issues associated with the product are understood to support risk-informed decisions. The group consists of the five core disciplines: Nuclear Safety (09411), Integrated Systems (09412), Reliability (08745, 09413), Technical Quality (09414), and Surveillance Assessment (09415). The evaluation of the stockpile is performed by a team assigned to each stockpiled or development system that consists of each discipline. These teams provide input that informs the congressionally mandated letter from the laboratory director stating the nuclear safety, security, and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapon deterrent

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
