Intern - Biological and Chemical Sensors - Technical Undergraduate - Year-Round

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Year Round - Technical Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team.
On any given day, you may be called on to team with technical staff to support the following activities:
  • Preparing biological samples for laboratory analysis
  • Supporting laboratory operations, including laboratory organization/cleaning, inventory management, and reagent preparation
  • Data entry, record keeping and data analysis


Posting Duration

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship


Qualifications We Desire

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field;
  • Experience working in biological and chemical laboratories, including biosafety level-2 (BSL-2) settings
  • Good laboratory practices, including sterile techniques
  • Familiarity with common office software tools, including Microsoft Excel
  • Available to work in blocks of at least four hours during normal business hours throughout year
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to obtain/maintain L-clearance is required.


About Our Team

The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. To support our chemical vapor detection effort, we are developing a state-of-the-art test and evaluation system to challenge a variety of sensors and systems. In biological detection, we have acoustic- and electrochemical-based portable systems for cell lysis and highly specific and sensitive detection of DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Our technologies are designed to be non-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care.

Security Clearance
