Application Deadline

Description
The Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) Internships is a new program to promote the education and development of the next generation workforce in critical science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) related disciplines that complement current and future missions of DOE national laboratories. The MSIPP Internship program is designed to provide an enhanced training environment for next generation scientists and engineers by exposing them to research challenges unique to our industry.
MSIPP Interns will be given the opportunity to complete Summer Internships aligned with ongoing U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) research under the direction of a host national laboratory. The internship will be performed at the host national laboratory, utilizing their facilities and equipment under the guidance of a research staff member.
Minority Serving Institutions are institutions of higher education enrolling populations with significant percentages of undergraduate minority students.
Project: The participant will gain a basic/introductory knowledge and understanding of a broad range of environmental regulations pertaining to water, air, soil and sediment, cultural and biological resources, waste management, and radiation, including requirements, implementation and rationale for the regulation. Additionally, the participant will gain a basic understanding of how regulations apply to, affect and are implemented at a Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Experience will be gained through both participation in hands-on in-the-field activities and office research related to a variety of environmental regulations specific to the work location at LANL. In the process, the participant will also gain skills in effective and professional communication of complex concepts to a range of audiences. The culmination of the internship will involve the preparation of a final project and presentation that demonstrates understanding and knowledge of environmental regulations and relationship to the site, which will be incorporated into regular site environmental observations.
NOTE: This internship can be completed fully remotely and will be adjusted as needed. If done remotely, the same information will be covered but will be tailored to compare/contrast between LANL requirements and requirements to a location with which the participant is familiar (i.e., their home location) and the final project requirement will be adjusted accordingly. The participant will need their own computer, phone and reliable internet access for this to be done remotely.
Salary: Selected candidate will be compensated by either a stipend or salary, and may include one round trip domestic travel to and from the host laboratory. Stipends and salaries will be commensurate with cost of living at the location of the host laboratory. Housing information will be provided to interns prior to arrival at the host laboratory, and will vary from lab to lab.
