Transit Operations Intern

This is a paid internship position that will exist for 12 months or less, starting in January/February 2021. We will accept applications from Colorado residents and non-residents. This position does not receive benefits.

Applications will be reviewed on a periodic basis and this announcement may be closed early if we find suitable intern candidates. It's in your best interest to apply as early as possible. 

During the pandemic much of the work may be done remotely, but you may also be asked to come into the office periodically.

Life at CDOT during COVID-19
At CDOT, we have taken several measures to protect employee safety and health, while ensuring continuity of operations. Employees with the ability to perform their job duties from home are encouraged to do so. For those employees who are working on-site, facial coverings in public spaces and social distancing when possible are required. We will provide employees with masks, as needed. We have implemented frequent deep cleaning and disinfecting procedures in our buildings and equipment. You can expect your interview to be done remotely and visitors to any CDOT building are required to pre-screen. Description of Job

The Division of Transit & Rail (DTR) is seeking a motivated, responsible college student or recent graduate who is pursuing a career in business, public administration, transportation/transit planning, finance, data analytics or a closely related area. This part-time collegiate internship aims to provide meaningful experience in transit operations to a student with proven academic performance and a strong desire to learn and contribute.
 
This internship opportunity is located in the Bus Operations Unit in the Division of Transit and Rail at CDOT. The Division of Transit and Rail is responsible for the planning, developing, operating, and integrating transit and rail into the statewide transportation system. The Bus Operations Unit is responsible for the operations management of the CDOT bus fleet, which includes the Bustang and Snowstang. 

Major duties and responsibilities:
The internship will serve an important role in helping coordinate transit operations. Key duties can include:
  • General Planning Support: Process and manipulate quantitative information in spreadsheets and/or spreadsheet graphics (MS Excel). These skills may be applied but are not limited to the following areas: Bustang transit operations (speed/time-distance) calculations, land use analysis (Acres/sq.ft), ridership data and budget preparation/analysis. This work will be in support of Senate Bills 228, 267 & 1, Bustang Interregional Express bus network and Bustang Outrider Rural Regional bus network, transportation demand management work statewide, and the implementation of the Statewide Transit Plan.
  • Communications & Presentation: Prepare technical memoranda, memoranda to stakeholders and Transportation Commission, study reports, press releases, sections of requests for proposals, FAQ's, and PowerPoint presentations. Both technical and conversational writing skills are necessary.
  • Oral/Interpersonal Skills - The Intern will be expected to conduct him/herself in a professional manner to schedule time with other individuals, obtain information, and to verbally explain approaches to tasks above and interim results. This position will require interactions with many individuals beyond the position's immediate supervisor, both in the Division of Transit and Rail and in the Office of Innovative Mobility as a whole.
Work Environment:
  • Expected work schedule is between Monday through Friday
  • Ability to work in an active, collaborative, team-oriented environment is a must
  • Use a computer to accomplish everyday work duties
  • During COVID-19 pandemic, work will be remote, via a computer, so the student needs a reliable WiFi connection; CDOT will provide a laptop
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

 Qualified candidates must be either:
  • Any college student enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. degree. 
OR
  • A recent college graduate. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree within the past three calendar years.
OR
  • A certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services Program.
The Exceptional Candidate will be a current college student, either in a bachelor’s or graduate program in one of the following majors: Business Administration, Public Administration, Transportation/Transit Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, Finance, Data Analytics or a closely related area AND demonstrate the following:
  • Strong interest in the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • Knowledge and experience with transportation planning or transit operations;
  • Desire to learn and develop;
  • Exemplary communication and organizational skills;
  • Solid analytical and critical thinking skills;
  • Willingness to be flexible, independent, and creative;
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, etc.)
  • Experience with Gmail and Google Applications;
  • The ability and interest to quickly learn other software systems.
A copy of your transcripts listing your name, the school name, courses by term, and term GPA or degree conferral and conferral date (if applicable) must be included in your documentation; unofficial copies are acceptable. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.
