Architect Internship

Position Description:
This 24-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. 

Duties:
  • Provide technical advice on all aspects of complex/unusual facility maintenance projects which include improvement plans for buildings, barracks, bridges, water and wastewater systems, residences, recreational, and other site facilities.
  • Coordinate engineering and administrative work between the unit and the next higher level of the organization.
  • Prepare completed and detailed designs, drawings, and specifications for projects such as roads, trails, bridges, or other miscellaneous facilities and structures.
  • Evaluate design plans and layouts prepared by others prior to the start of construction.
  • Provide direction to others in the principles of planning, designing, operation, maintenance, monitoring, and inspection of engineering facilities.
  • Perform complex technical calculations to identify the most economical/efficient procedures for facility projects.
  • Perform reviews to determine the probability of terms for complex or expensive facility projects.
  • Conduct safety inspections and condition surveys of structures and facilities such as buildings, water and wastewater systems, recreation site facilities, and utilities according to requirements.
  • Evaluate and recommend corrective action as needed to ensure the safety of all users.

Requirements:
  • NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board) accredited professional degree in Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture (NOT B.S. or B.A) or Master of Architecture (NOT M.S. or M.A)
  • Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree. These are the only two professional degrees in architecture.
  • An unofficial copy of their transcript to verify the degree they have earned or are seeking.
  • A copy of their portfolio. Because of file sizes, a link in their resume is sufficient
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.

Special Skills:
Revit, AutoCAD, GIS, graphic design tools

Benefits:
  • $17- $21 based on experience 
  • $1,000/month Housing Stipend
  • Up to $5,000 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, training, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.

*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
