Intern- Fort Larned National Historic Site

About the Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program:
CVAs will focus on a number of core objectives, including building enduring relationships with local communities, increasing the number of volunteers who serve at the park, helping to improve disaster response processes in regard to volunteer mobilization, and helping to organize community stewardship days. A key effort in achieving success will be to diversify the volunteer pool, engage under-served members of the community, and engage veterans and military families in meaningful volunteer projects.


About the Site: Fort Larned National Historic Site (Larned, KS)
Discover a complete and authentic army post from the 1860s1870s! This well-preserved fort on the Santa Fe Trail shares a tumultuous history of the Indian Wars era. The sandstone constructed buildings sheltered troops who were known as the Guardians of the Santa Fe Trail.

Position Summary:
The position will serve as part of the interpretive division and will play a key role in volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, recognition, and program management. 

Position Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the frontline volunteer coordinator for the park’s living history program, specifically seeking to increase the diversity of the volunteers to reflect the increased diversity of stories told in the park’s new museum exhibits.
  • Participate in jobs associated with the interpretive division by working the Visitor Center information desk, and participating in living history activities. 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Self-motivated individual with an outgoing, friendly attitude
  • Professional, reliable, and detail oriented
  • Preferred Education - History, Public History, Education, or Museum Studies
  • Public speaking experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Between the ages of 18-30 years old (35 years old if you are a veteran)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Submit proof of a Driver’s License and undergo a Federal Background Check, upon selection

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graphic design skills a plus
  • Flexibility, ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Recent experience in a setting that regularly engages the public, specifically in a visitor-service, park, or museum setting.
  • Experience coordinating events, conducting outreach and recruitment

Position Details & Benefits:
  • Length: position is 50 weeks, 40 hours/week Start Date: Monday, February 8th 2021
  • Living Allowance: Baseline allowance of $440/week
  • AmeriCorps Award: $6,095 (pretax)
  • Application Due Date: 1/22/2021, or Until Filled
  • Members will receive Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon completion of the program
  • Members will attend a week-long, nationwide Virtual National Early Service Training
