Technician Electrician Trainee

General Summary
The Technician Electrician – Intern is a seasonal position that has been created to provide additional labor resources during high volume construction seasons. The Technician Electrician – Intern will assist in the installation, testing, maintenance and repair of all substation, communications, SCADA, load management and line equipment used on the electrical distribution system. The Technician Electrician – Intern’s exposure to the different types of construction and maintenance practices of the co-op will coincide with the intern’s skills and experience.
Responsibilities
1. Comply with established Dakota Electric’s safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines; and be responsible for reporting un-safe practices to a supervisor.
2. Assist with the installation, testing, maintenance and repair work on the load management and communications systems. Maintains a working knowledge of these systems.
3. Assist with the installation, testing and maintenance of DEA’s SCADA system.
4. System operations-understand protection techniques, and equipment operations and performs switching and testing as assigned.
5. Substation maintenance work – performs routine and emergency maintenance of substation equipment. Records testing, maintenance and repairs of substation equipment.
6. Support substation construction work – install and test all substation equipment.
7. Line equipment maintenance-conduct inspection of new line equipment installations such as regulators, OCR’s capacitor banks, power operated switchgear, and other apparatus. Also perform inspections, maintenance/repair and updating of this equipment in the field and in the tech shop.
8. Perform other work as apparent or assigned.

Position Specifications
Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Vocational school graduate in a technical electrical/electronic course or equivalent is also required. Related Training and or equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of the required education.
Two years previous electrical experience preferred. Four years of directly related electrical utility experience in a similar position may be accepted in lieu of the education requirement.
Key Competencies
• Must be familiar with safety rules and working policies and procedures.
• Must become familiar with the installation and maintenance of DEA substation’s, line protection and operate the associated test equipment; communications; SCADA and load management equipment.
• Must have some knowledge of electrical power systems and an understanding of the functions of the individual components in the system. Must be able to read AC and DC schematics and connection diagrams and understand the electrical circuitry.
• Required to possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license with good driving record.
• Must be an effective communicator in both written and oral communications.
• Must be able to effectively utilize computers for installation, testing and repair of all field equipment.
• Must be able to use computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, Cityworks, GIS.
• Must have thorough knowledge of basic math and algebra.
• Must have the ability to follow directions and follow through accurately.
• Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Supports teamwork by providing effective participation, cooperation and communication.
• Must be innovative in order to creatively develop new solutions to problems. Seeks, recommends, develops, supports and encourages new ideas.
• Must be able to use system maps to find correct addresses.
