Open Space Maintenance Tech I
Full-time with Benefits
         
HOURS: Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and additional hours as necessary to meet Department needs.
ADDITIONAL HOURS:  Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Required to work rotational on-call shifts (including weekends and holidays). 
SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Town Forester/Open Space Manager, the Open Space Tech I position is to assist in maintaining open space, natural areas, and trails within the Town of Berthoud.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Perform technical open space maintenance, repair, and land management duties including but not limited to mowing, weed trimming, noxious species mitigation, fertilization, seeding, irrigation, fence repair, and litter control
  • Perform trail maintenance including but not limited to trail design, installation, mapping, upkeep, and repair
  • Conduct pond, lake, and reservoir maintenance including but not limited to cattail control, algae and muck control, water dying, fish stocking, litter control, dock inspections and repair, and aeration pump upkeep
  • Coordinate with Colorado Parks and Wildlife regarding best management practices and appropriate fish stocking procedures
  • Coordinate with local partners and stakeholders regarding recreational, agricultural, and environmental related projects
  • Oversee contracts between the Town and various contractors regarding noxious weed mitigation and pesticide applications
  • Assist in wetland restoration and wildlife habitat preservation
  • Assist in installing and maintaining interpretive/educational signage
  • Apply for grants directly related to Town open space management, maintenance, and acquisition
  • Operate and maintain open space related equipment such as Town vehicles, slope mowers, tractors, front-end loaders, skid steers, UTV’s, chainsaws, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, backpack sprayers, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing irrigation drip line systems for Town owned and maintained trees located in open space, natural areas, and along trail systems
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Town’s xeriscape garden and generate project proposals for future xeriscape garden design, installation, and locations
  • Assist in maintaining the Town’s tree nursery
  • Professionally communicate and conduct consultations to the public – in person, on the phone, and via email – regarding open space, natural area, and trail issues, concerns, and management needs
  • May be required to attend monthly P.O.R.T Advisory Committee meetings, and assist Committee members in public outreach including hosting educational booths during Town festivals
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • Perform snow removal on Town owned and maintained sidewalks and trails
  • Assist in forestry operations including tree maintenance, removal, and planting
  • Assist in hanging banners, American flags, and Christmas lighting/decorations throughout Town parks and along Mountain Avenue
  • Assist other departments including Parks and Recreation Staff with miscellaneous projects and operations
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must possess a 2-4 year degree (4 year preferred) in Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, or closely related field and/or 1 or more years of progressive experience in open space and natural resource management.
CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Valid State of Colorado Driver’s License (required)
  • Colorado Commercial Pesticide Applicators License (in Rangeland and Right-of-Way) or ability to obtain within six (6) months
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Native grass, tree, and shrub identification and nomenclature for species of the Front Range of Colorado
  • Comprehensive knowledge of native grass, tree, and shrub biology and physiology
  • Experience using GIS devices and mapping software
  • Previous experience safely and properly operating and maintaining power equipment and other open space related power tools
  • Previous experience safely driving truck and tow trailer combination
  • Previous experience safely operating machinery equipment including but not limited to mowers, tractors, skid steers, front end loaders, and backhoes
  • Ability to meet departmental goals, and establishes a cooperative working relationship with other employees, departments, and the general public
  • Ability to soundly communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to resolve conflicts, utilizing various problem-solving techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Perform all job duties in a safe manner
  • Ability to stay calm under stressful situations
  • Previous experience in forestry maintenance operations including pruning, removal, and planting
  • Previous experience in Parks & Recreation maintenance
WORK ENVIORNMENT DEMANDS:
  • Be flexible and willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Be able to walk, stand, bend-over, sit for extended periods of time
  • Be physically able to lift heavy weights (up to 100lbs)
  • Be comfortable working at high heights (up to 65+ feet)
