Mechanical Engineer, Entry Level

A professional position is currently open for an entry level Mechanical Design Engineer in support of the spent nuclear fuel examination program. In this position, candidates will be responsible for providing fully engineered equipment and system solutions to our customer. Component designs support the handling of spent nuclear fuel and the design of systems to mechanically disassemble and retrieve examination data from spent nuclear fuel. This will require the performance of a broad range of mechanical design skills using fundamental mechanical engineering concepts as well as in-depth structural analysis techniques, hands-on lab development of hardware and processes, proof of principle testing, and project documentation. Core Examination Design (CED) is the support organization for automated system design projects that will be used in remote environments and therefore the candidate will benefit from a general understanding of control systems operation
Candidates will define and execute work plans while maintaining proper communication with immediate management and also interfacing directly with our customer. Cognizant areas may include planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, and testing of components and systems. Work may include detailed evaluations, design reviews, operations support, and safety analysis generation.

Additional Activities may include:
  • Represent Core Examination Design (CED) in interface activities with other NNL product lines, operational groups, and Naval Reactors.
  • Establish equipment concepts for future exams.
  • Occasional travel to Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) in Idaho (up to 1 time per year).

REQUIRED SKILLS *

Associate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university
 
Intermediate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience; or
  • Currently or previously EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • SRE Qualification

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Hands-on equipment design experience and testing
