Extension 4-H Youth Development Assistant, Larimer County

The primary role of the intern will be to assist the Larimer County 4-H program with educational programming and to support participation in the County Fair and associated shows and contests. This position will provide opportunities to gain experience with a community-based education program, organizing events and activities, and the 4-H program. The majority of the summer time will be spent working with various stages of program development and educational activities that include 4-H members.
 
This position will be up to 40 hour a week from May 24-August 14th, then a 20 hour a week position with flexible scheduling August 15-September 30. Through the summer, the possible 40 hours will include working varied hours in the nights and weekends frequently. Most hours during the school year will be spent in the Extension Office located at 1525 Blue Spruce Drive, Fort Collins, CO 80524. The direct Supervisor will be one of the 4-H Youth Development Agents, depending on the interests and aptitudes of the selected candidate. Additional guidance, support and direction will be provided from the other 4-H Youth Development Agent, 4-H Program Coordinator, 4-H Support Staff, and the Larimer County Extension Director.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
During the School Year:
Planning and Coordination of events such as: Open House, Carnival Booth, Achievement Night, Cloverbud Workshops, general workshops and Contests (Cake Decorating, Performing Arts, Consumer Choices, Skill-A-Thon, Consumer Bowl, Creative Cooks, and Fashion Revue, Speech and Demonstrations,) Livestock MQA/ Field Days, Weigh Days, and other workshops and contests as assigned. Planning and Coordination job duties includes:
  • Scheduling
  •  Working with volunteers and committees
  • Be present with the agent at some livestock, horse, and shooting sport events throughout the year as a networking opportunity amongst people in the community.
  • Identify weaknesses within a program through events attended.
  • Recruiting judges
  • Providing score sheets
  • Gathering supply boxes
  • Gathering ribbons or awards
  • Creating and managing registration forms
  • Marketing/ PR in newsletters
  • Support with photos and social media
  • Data entry
  • Necessary updates to website to market the event
  • Opportunity to teach at workshops if desired
  • Other duties as assigned 

During the Summer:
County Fair attendance and support though the summer. Job duties include:
  • Entering registrations
  • Accepting fees
  • Answering questions
  • Preparing awards
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
General Support:
  • Ordering supplies
  • Copying
  • Responding to Email
  • Phone Calls
  • Support with all project areas
  • Other duties as necessary to support program efforts
 
Required Attendance for the Following Events:
Larimer County Fair
  • Set Up: various dates in July and August
  • Dog Show: July 24-25
  • Fashion Revue: July 28
  • Interview Days - August 2-3
  • Larimer County Fair August 6-10
Colorado State Fair
  • State Fair Exhibit Drop off- Aug 16 (if possible with your school schedule)
  • Transporting State Fair Exhibits to and from Pueblo – August 17 (if possible with your school schedule)

Required Skills:
  • Must be a CSU Student, currently enrolled
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both youth and adults
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite products and Sign Up Genius or other registration software
  • Independent, highly organized, and detail-oriented
  • Energetic, hard-working, and enthusiastic team player
  • Available to work full time through summer to support County Fair activities.
  • Available to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Skills
  • 4-H/Livestock experience or knowledge
  • Understanding of Colorado State University Extension Service
  • Education/ teaching or event coordination experience
  • Volunteer coordination experience

Hourly Pay Range:
$13.00 - $14.00 per hour depending on experience
