Investigations Intern

THE DEPARTMENT
 
The City Manager's Office has 51 full and part-time employees focusing on City Council support, executive management, intergovernmental relations, public affairs, special events and filming, Citizen Police Complaint Commission objectives, Sustainability, and the Office of Innovation. The mission is to implement programs in accordance with City Council policies, the City Charter and Municipal Code, while providing organizational leadership for effective delivery of services to the community.
 
THE DIVISION
 
Under the Office of the City Manager, the Citizen Police Complaint Commission (CPCC) investigates allegations of police misconduct, reviews the service provided by members of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), and provides input to the City Manager, Mayor, and City Council on specified matters.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
THE POSITIONS
 
The CPCC Division is seeking interns to assist the division manager and investigators. Duties will vary depending upon qualifications and academic level of the applicant. Interns will work with investigators and obtain hands-on experience in: 
 
  1. Conducting and reviewing investigations related to allegations of police misconduct
  2. Transcribing interviews or related material
  3. Preparing detailed and concise written reports to support an investigation 
  4. Gathering and analyzing data and facts as needed to support investigations
  5. Maintaining confidential reports, files, and managing caseloads 
  6. May be required to attend monthly evening commission meetings and/or assist staff with preparing meeting materials
Performs other related duties as needed. 
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
1) Applicants must be current college students or recent college graduates who have completed their degree in (Political Science, Public Administration, Law, Public Affairs, Communications, Public Relations, Public Policy, History, Criminal Justice, Social Ecology or related fields).
 
2) Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
 
3) Must pass a criminal background check (i.e., Livescan fingerprinting).
 
4) Must have reliable transportation. ***This internship program will be an in-person opportunity where interns will be required to report to City Hall (i.e., located at 411 W. Ocean Blvd. Long Beach, CA 90802). 
 
5) Must be available for the entire program (estimated 8-12 weeks). ***Interns must be available to work up to 8 hours shifts, Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
 
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
 
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to research information and prepare reports.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Reliable
Outgoing
Ability to work well with others and independently.
Professional appearance and business attire are required.
Bilingual applicants preferred but not required.

If selected, we will contact you for an interview. We anticipate conducting interviews sometime in late May.
