Reactor Mechanical Engineer (Entry Level)

The successful candidate will work as part of a team to plan and perform engineering evaluations and analyses of the A1B reactor design used in the FORD class aircraft carrier in support of manufacturing, shipyard construction, fleet operations and reactor servicing. Support of manufacturing may include evaluation of deviations from design requirements, evaluation of proposed drawing changes, and development of concepts for improved performance and/or affordability. Support of shipyard construction or fleet operations may include responding to emergent shipyard or fleet issues associated with reactor construction, or issues related to performance of the reactor core, core structural components, reactor heavy equipment, or head area components. Support of reactor servicing may include evaluations of procedures and equipment that interface with the FORD class reactor. Structural analyses may include the use of computer model simulations and detailed interpretation and documentation of the results. Work will include interfacing with other engineering disciplines and organizations, Newport News Shipbuilding, Naval Reactors personnel and senior management. Opportunities may also exist to evaluate new fuel systems and reactor technologies for future FORD class ships. 

REQUIRED SKILLS *

Associate:
BS degree in engineering or science from an accredited college or university required

Intermediate:
BS degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited college or university.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Mechanical or Structural Engineering degrees are preferred
  • Coursework in Nuclear Engineering
  • Previous scholastic or work experience in mechanical design and analysis
  • Previous scholastic or work experience in reactor engineering
  • Experience with finite element analysis and software (e.g., Abaqus)
  • Familiarity with other computer software (e.g., ANSYS, Python)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • DOE Security Clearance
