St Mary's is the gateway to Cumberland Island (CUIS), Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island. Here pristine maritime forests, undeveloped beaches and wide marshes whisper the stories of both man and nature. Natives, missionaries, enslaved African Americans and Wealthy Industrialists all walked here. Cumberland Island is also home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated Wilderness.

CUIS hosts volunteers contributing over 12,000 hours annually to the preservation of the natural and cultural resources of the largest barrier island in the southeastern US. The CVA will engage with our local communities to create connections to their park, foster new relationships, participate in community events to promote park volunteer and educational events, and help increase the sustainability of established programs while gaining valuable career skills.

  1. Assist with maintaining the park’s social media presence on Facebook accounts to promote volunteerism
  2.  Enhance the operation of volunteer programs by developing and supporting related projects, activities, and goals.
  3. Assist with diversifying volunteers and engage underserved members of the park’s community
  4. Collaborating with partners and staff to develop a plan for CUIS upcoming 50th anniversary celebration
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent
  •  1 year of work or volunteer experience in a position that requires public speaking
  •  Be flexible and have a cheerful attitude
  • Ability to work independently and with a small work group
  • Ability to work with many different types of people and personalities as well as differently abled populations High School diploma or GED required 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident 
  • Be 18-30 years old (35 years old if you are a veteran) 
  • Be willing and able to commit to a year of full-time work 
  • Be willing to occasionally work weekends and odd hours 
  • Submit proof of a Driver’s License and undergo a Federal Background Check, upon selection
