INTERNSHIP - Software Engineering - Aero Systems

Position Purpose The purpose of an internship at Woodward is to provide students with the opportunity to gain exposure and “real life” business acumen within the Aerospace and Energy Industry. Our internships also provide students with the opportunity to learn and gain practical experience and to work in areas related to their academic and/or career interests. Gain hands-on experience while working on challenging projects, network with professionals and learn from some of the brightest minds in business.

The experience also gives the intern opportunity for potential full-time employment with the company.

Essential Functions
  • Complete tasks on computer using MS Office programs such as Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Interact effectively with team members on a daily basis. Share opinions and ask questions relevant to the work and/or his or her study program.

  • Maintain good attendance and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Present year-end presentation of Woodward internship experience.
  • Must report GPA status to leader on a quarterly/semester basis.

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES
#1. Implement software demodulation of an LVDT sensor. Use analog to digital converter of a Texas Instrument DSP to read the signals from the primary and secondary windings of a Linear Variable Differential Transformer. Calculated the linear position displacement based on the signal data. Additionally, evaluate the potential to apply the algorithms to a resolver sensor.

#2. Implement field oriented current control of a brushless direct-current motor using the control law accelerator of a Texas Instrument DSP. Use CLA to pull in motor phase current feedback and motor rotational data and use that data with Clarke/Park transforms and space vector modulation algorithms to determine duty cycle of pulse width modulation outputs driving motor phase voltages.

#3. Implement standardized event and fault logging routines to a direct access non-volatile memory device. Features include (1) circular event log with timestamps, where oldest record is overwritten when log is full (2) specific event instance log with timestamps, where the first and most recent occurrences of specific events are recorded (4) performance monitoring data log with timestamps, where min/max values of operational data points are recorded (3) histogram log, where cumulative counts of categorized data is recorded, such as number of minutes operating in various temperature ranges. All data has integrity checks (such as SHA256 or CRC32). Routines must be implement to queue up the data to space out data writes over time, so as to not impeded operation of critical real-time software execution.

Other Functions
  • Other functions will vary based on the assigned work area.
  • May rotate assignments to gain additional business experience.
